Did you know that there are 20 million hens in the UK alone living out their lives in a small cage? They have no more room per hen than a piece of A4 paper. Is this the kind of condition you want your food coming from?
You can make a difference.
If you have the time, please take a look at the work the Battery Hen Welfare Trust does. We all have the ability to help these hens, just by changing our buying habits.
We also keep a number of rescued battery hens. At present we have twenty four and we hope to be taking on some more in the near future. These poor chickens have been treated as nothing more than egg laying machines for all of their short lives. We give these rescued hens the very best of care so that they recover fully. You would be amazed at how these chickens act when they first arrive- just like zombies. It doesn't take them long to start behaving like a chicken should. All of our rescued birds will stay with us to the end of their natural days and live a real life, unlike many thousands of their previous cell mates.

These are some of the lucky ones that have been given a second chance. We rehomed these girls in January 2008.
They have quickly found their zest for life and their condition has improved beyond all recognition. If you would like offer a home to girls just like these, you can do so by contacting the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, a link to the trust can be found on our links page.
These girls now look like this
